Truebeck, an innovative leader in the construction industry, completed the final phase of the John Muir Behavioral Health Center renovation in Concord, California.

Broken down into three phases, the behavioral health center was renovated to refresh the interiors and bring the entire facility up to the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) code. The first phase focused primarily on the adolescent unit; the second phase was on the Child and Chemical Dependency Units; the third phase was the administrative office area and first floor accessibility upgrades. The entire renovation encompassed 20,000 square feet and with the completion of phase three, every division of the facility will be operational and compliant with OSHPD regulation.

In order to make the entire building compliant with state and federal regulation, the project team removed old installation to make way for new anti-ligature compliant amenities. These included custom doors, faucets, handrails, and even floor drainage that prevent the attachment of any cordage that could be used to commit self-harm. In the case of this particular tenant improvement, exceptional care was placed on the design around these features and construction teams needed to build everything exactly as planned. With actual lives at risk, the design and project team were thorough and exact on their planning and delivery of the renovation.

When it came to this project, intricate logistics and communication processes were required. Since many of the different wings of the center remained operational during the different phases, Truebeck’s team of technical builders worked closely with behavioral health center staff to ensure the successful completion of the project. Such interactions included noise mitigation plans, working outside of normal hours to accommodate staff, implementing containment booths, and completing infectious control risk assessments and disruption notices.

“The staff know the unit, the patients, and the risks, and we know the construction risk for worker safety. We had to adapt and work with the John Muir Health team to ensure the best outcome for both project delivery and patient care,” said the Assistant Superintendent on the project.

With the successful completion of this project, John Muir Health’s staff stands ready to provide the best in care and safety for their patients. It is Truebeck’s hope that this newly renovated behavioral health center will assist in the successful recovery of some of the most vulnerable members of our communities.

In April, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors approved the award of the San Mateo County Medical Center project to Truebeck Construction. With the original medical facilities being built in the 1950’s, there was a need for a new medical center to keep up with the ever-changing healthcare needs of patients in the community. Truebeck Construction is providing preconstruction and construction services to the County, and working with the architect Taylor Design.

The Health System Campus project encompasses a full city block and includes 200,000sf of sitework and 289,000sf of construction comprised of multiple buildings, including the “1954 Building” (Administration Building), Nursing Wing, Diagnostic and Treatment Center, Clinics, Central Plant, North Addition, and Health Services Building.

The project scope consists of:

  • Renovation of approximately 24,000 SF of hospital space
  • Demolition of the 1954 era Building and the Health Services Building
  • Construction of a new approximately 70,000 SF Administrative Office Building
  • A variety of make ready/site improvements/phased scopes

Construction will be complete in 2021.

The new 60,000sf, two-story medical office building at Montage Health’s Ryan Ranch campus will be the flagship office for nearly 90 doctors. The topping off ceremony, held on Tuesday, May 9th, marked a key project milestone towards completion of this state-of-the-art facility.

It sets a standard for medical office buildings not only in California, but in the United States.

– Anthony Chavis, MED, chief medical officer of Montage Health.

The $23 million building will be the seventh and largest office of Montage Medical Group, a sister company of Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula (CHOMP). “Great care went into developing and designing the interior space and workflow,” said Chavis. Care providers of Montage Medical Group built actual-size models of interior space out of cardboard and then tested them, going through the process actual patients, office staff, nurses, doctors, and others do in the course of typical office visits.

Once complete, the building will include: 91 Examination rooms, five family consultation rooms, one conference room, and four laboratory blood draw stations.

After completing the ground-up medical office building and wellness center for their Marina Campus, we are excited to be working with CHOMP and Boulder Associates on another cutting edge medical facility – helping to ensure our communities have access to care.

In the 2016 Hospital Construction Survey, behavioral health centers ranked No. 1 in specialty hospital projects being built. Truebeck and KMD Architects are renovating the John Muir Health Behavioral Health Outpatient Services facility in Concord. Improving behavioral health care starts with transforming the design, and creating a healing environment.

The project is an OSHPD 3 tenant improvement which will serve three programs: (1) Chemical Dependency Program, (2) Adult Behavioral Health Services, and (3) Adolescent Behavioral Health Services. The project will include meeting spaces, offices, and a reheating/catering kitchen facility.

This week, Truebeck attended the annual American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) Planning, Design & Construction Summit in San Diego. More than 3,000 people attended this year’s PDC Summit, which focused on health care’s Triple Aim: better population health, improved patient experiences, and lower costs. The PDC Summit offers cutting-edge topics affecting the future of the health care built environment and presents thought-provoking research and presentations focusing on cross-team collaboration, PDC sustainability, designing for future generations, and technology integration.

The event was an opportunity to network with healthcare industry professionals, including hospital administrators, architects, interior designers, construction professionals, and health care facility management. Truebeck promoted our healthcare experience at a booth in the Exhibit Hall and hosted a private happy hour for our contacts in the healthcare sector.

Dan Amigone had this to say:

“Truebeck had a great experience at ASHE.  We all got a chance to meet new people in the world of Healthcare Planning, Design and Construction. There was a good mix of clients, design professionals and vendors. We got the word out that Truebeck has a strong pool of talented healthcare professionals. It was great to see what is going on in the industry, both locally and nationally.”
